The life of a wedding planner can be described in four simple words. Never a dull moment. While it may seem that our lives are full of flowers, champagne, and beautiful dresses, behind the curtain the reality can be very different.
Our drawers are not full of pens and clipboards, but safety pins, scatter crystals, ribbon, fishing wire, glue, and screwdrivers (no, seriously). Behind every wedding that went off without a hitch is a wedding coordinator always prepared for a crisis.
My name is Keira; I’m the Events Manager at Tregenna Castle Resort and here is a rundown of my favourite scenarios I have found myself in during the run up to some very memorable weddings throughout my career:
1. Chewing gum disposal
I once had a groomsman spit chewing gum into my hand seconds before the bride entered the room. A beautiful start to the ceremony…
2. Chasing seagulls
I have had to chase seagulls away from some alfresco afternoon tea. A small price to pay for the gorgeous views available at Tregenna.
3. Awkward family feuds
Having to step in as referee between the bride and her mother, or even the bride and her mother-in-law. I have done both!
4. Collapsing cakes
Ok so this one wasn’t me. Our chef had to reconstruct a cake that had collapsed in on itself during transit. And he did a fine job too!
5. Lost wedding rings
Crawling on my hands and knees to find the wedding rings the page boy had managed to lose. Understandably the bride and groom were panicking, but it’s ok we found them in the end!
6. Runaway veil
One bride was outside with her wedding party for photos and her veil was caught in a gust of wind. Guess whose job it was to chase it?
7. Disposing of doggy doodoo
While working with another venue wedding photos were about to take place so myself and a few others had to do an emergency dog poo clearing run – it doesn’t get much more glamorous than that!
8. Emergency DJ
When one couple’s wedding CD wouldn’t play, I crafted a playlist on my phone to use over the sound system. To this day this random playlist is still on there.
9. Broken heels
This one happens surprisingly often – having to run around and get a spare set of shoes for the bride or one of the bridesmaids when their heels snap.
10. A few too many
There was one occasion where I had to help the bride get out of her dress at the end of the day as her new husband had had a few too many and fell asleep before he could help her out of it himself!
Phew! It’s a tough job, but a highly rewarding one. Behind every wedding coordinator is a good pair of flat shoes and a constant supply of strong coffee!
