Heading down to St Ives on your next holiday? Wherever you’re travelling from and however you’re getting here, long journeys can be tough on the little ones. We’ve put together our favourite ways to keep the kids occupied as you hit the road or take to the skies as you embark on your next family holiday.
Use your surroundings to create car games
On long car journeys the possibilities are endless. From creating phrases from the last three letters of passerby’s number plates to naming something you can see out of the window for every letter of the alphabet, the world around you is a fantastic source of play for your little ones.
Bring back the classics
While this may not entertain them for the whole journey, a brief spell of I-spy is an inexhaustible source of fun. If you’re on a stretch of motorway and lacking inspiration, you can encourage your little ones to play the Can’t Say Yes or No game.
Get them immersed in puzzle books and colouring
From simple spot the difference to challenging Sudoku, puzzle books have something for everyone no matter how you’re travelling. You can find the perfect puzzles for any age, from the tiniest of toddlers to the brainiest of older siblings, and purchase them in supermarkets, newsagents, and in service station shops.
Audiobooks (we recommend Harry Potter)
Audiobooks are a fantastic way to keep the little ones entertained and give yourself a chance to relax. We highly recommend the Harry Potter series as they will definitely last longer than your journey and who wouldn’t love Stephen Fry’s company on a long trip?
Technology can be your friend
Don’t be afraid to bring along some kid-friendly tech. iPads are a fantastic source of entertainment for children, teens will likely have their own devices on-hand, and portable DVD players are also a great way to keep your little ones occupied. The best thing? They come with a chance of peace and quiet for the designated driver!
