A Cornish father who took some of his last steps on his wedding day at Tregenna Castle Resort is over the moon after winning the chance to revisit the venue on his third anniversary.
James Ball, of Camborne, married wife Shelley in August 2012 at their dream destination, but tragically just weeks later a condition he was unaware of suffering left him wheelchair bound.
Three years on the 36-year-old has never walked again and lives downstairs in the house he shares with his wife and family.
So when the former builder came across the chance to enter a competition being run by the Tregenna Castle Resort to share his wedding day memories for the chance to win an overnight stay with a romantic champagne dinner, he entered immediately.
And after beating out more than 60 other entries James said he was delighted to be able to give something to Shelley, 35, after all she’s done for him.
“It was a bit of a surprise to win so when I got the phone call I was like wow,” said James. “Shelley has stuck by me through it all and been so brilliant, I couldn’t ask for more.
“She was the main reason I entered the competition. I can’t do a lot for her and she does everything for me so this was my only way to say thank you to her.”
The couple will enjoy their prize at Tregenna Castle Resort this August, exactly three years on from their wedding day on August 27 in 2012.
“It was an absolutely fantastic day,” recalled James. “We chose Tregenna because it was a beautiful location and Shelley always wanted to get married in a castle. As soon as Shelley and I saw it we just knew.
“On the day itself the weather was a bit off so we had to get married inside. The staff and the resort was just amazing, they made it the most perfect day for us. It was absolutely superb.
“In the morning Shelley also got a surprise when she realised she was pregnant. But she didn’t tell me until a few days later.”
Sadly a short time after the wedding James visited the doctor after struggling to walk due to hip pains and was diagnosed with impingement syndrome – by October he was wheelchair bound.
“I always had problems with my knees and hips being a builder and playing rugby with the Redruth Rugby Club,” said James. “But I just carried on. Eventually it got too much and I went to the doctors.
“I’ve had operations to try and resolve some of the issues but it’s gone from bad to worse.
“But through it all Shelley has been my rock. Not many women would have stuck around, it’s not been an easy road at all. I’m just grateful to Tregenna for giving me the chance to say thank you to her properly for being an amazing wife and mother.”
And it’s not just James Ball that’s looking forward to the stay next month. James Parker, Operations Director at Tregenna Castle Resort, said everyone was looking forward to welcoming the couple.
“The wedding memories competition has really given us the chance to reconnect with some of the couples who chose Tregenna Castle as the place for the most important day of their life together,” said James Parker.
“We had more than 60 photos and memories sent to us so it’s been wonderful looking through them all, but James and Shelley really have proved to be deserving winners. We are very much looking forward to welcoming them on their third wedding anniversary and hope they enjoy their stay with us.”
