| Tregenna's
sub tropical walled gardens were created by award winning garden
designer John Moreland. It is full of scented mediterranean plants,
meandering pathways, a snaking 'serpentine' hedge border- cut at
an angle to maximise its exposure to sunlight- and a water feature
surrounded by lavender. An example of just how the garden has thrived
is an olive- normally a slow-growing plant even in the mediterranean-that
has trebled in size.
The
sub tropical gardens progress is testimony to the ideal growing
conditions in that part of Cornwall, i.e., wet and warm. As well
as working in the walled garden at the hotel and the Tregenna Homes
complex, John and his team have completed the water garden with
its waterfall and cascade at the lower end of the woodland valley
garden.
Particular varieties of plants we have planted
at Tregenna are Citus purpureus
with its deep purplish-pink saucer shaped flower and distinctive
deep red blotch and clear pink of cistus 'silver pink'. Both plants
give off a heavy scent when the sun shines as they release the essential
oils in their leaves.
We
also have a number of the Rosemary and santolina family especially
the trailing rosemary and the pale primrose-yellow Santolina neapolitana'Sulphure'.
Of course there are many different lavenders to choose from both
the English and french varieties.. L.'Hidcote'...L.'Munstead' l
stoechas et al.
Of course one of the all time favourites for mid
and late summer flowering is
the Agapanthas. Either the commoner sky blue or the deeper purplish
blue of
Agapanthas'Purple cloud'.
Tregenna Castle Gardens , St Ives are open to the
public from dawn to dusk
admission free. It is possible to arrange Garden Tours guided by
John Moreland
or Dave Tester, Head Gardener. Please contact
reception or e-mail.
